Maximum boost clocks and vendor power fields are not cross-architecture performance scores. Intel’s processor base power / maximum turbo power and AMD’s default TDP are different published fields, not equivalent wall-power measurements.
1. Start with the platform you already own
If you already have a working LGA1700 motherboard, the useful question is not simply which CPU is newer. Confirm the exact motherboard model, BIOS version, CPU support list, VRM limits, memory type and cooling clearance. A board that physically has an LGA1700 socket may still require a BIOS update or may not support every processor configuration.
If you are buying a complete new system, compare the CPU, motherboard, memory, cooler and troubleshooting path as one bill. The Intel options can use either DDR4 or DDR5 on a board designed for that memory type; a DDR4 module cannot be installed in a DDR5 slot. Ryzen 5 7600 requires an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory.
- Existing compatible LGA1700 system: calculate the cost of a BIOS-supported CPU swap before replacing the board and memory.
- New budget build: compare real board and memory prices, not the CPU price alone.
- New AM5 build: verify the exact chipset features, board firmware, memory QVL and rear I/O instead of assuming every AM5 board is equivalent.
2. Treat core count as a specification, not a benchmark
The i5-14400F has the largest documented core and thread count in this group. That can be relevant when software can schedule work across more threads, but it does not prove a fixed advantage in games, content creation or general responsiveness. Architecture, clock behavior, memory, operating-system scheduling, cooling, power limits and the application itself all affect measured performance.
The i5-12400F and Ryzen 5 7600 both list six cores and twelve threads, yet they use different architectures, sockets and memory ecosystems. Likewise, the Ryzen’s higher maximum boost number cannot be compared directly with an Intel boost number as if GHz were a universal performance score.
3. Graphics and cooler costs can change the build
Intel confirms that processors ending in F do not include Intel processor graphics. Both Intel choices therefore need a discrete graphics card for display output. This matters during first boot and troubleshooting: motherboard video ports will not create a display signal without a CPU graphics engine.
AMD lists a basic two-core Radeon graphics engine for the Ryzen 5 7600. It can provide display output and a troubleshooting fallback, but BYT01 has not tested it here and does not present it as a gaming-performance result.
The two Saudi Intel listings are explicitly tray products. Do not assume the photographed or described accessory bundle includes a retail cooler or Intel boxed warranty. AMD’s official page lists the Wraith Stealth as the thermal solution for the PIB/boxed processor, but the retailer’s exact package and regional warranty still need confirmation before payment.
4. Plan cooling and power from the complete system
Intel publishes 65W processor base power and maximum turbo power of 117W for the i5-12400F and 148W for the i5-14400F. AMD publishes a 65W default TDP for the Ryzen 5 7600. These values help identify the class of cooling and board power delivery to investigate, but they do not tell you the system’s measured wall consumption, temperature or noise.
Choose a cooler that is physically compatible with the socket, case height, memory clearance and motherboard mounting hardware. Then size the power supply from the GPU, CPU, transient behavior, connectors and future parts—not from the CPU field alone. BYT01 has not measured these processors under a shared cooler, BIOS, power policy and workload, so no efficiency or acoustic winner is declared.
5. Which one fits each buying situation?
Choose the i5-12400F shortlist when…
The lowest dated CPU price is the first constraint, you already plan to use a discrete GPU, and a compatible LGA1700 board plus cooler can be verified. At 789 SAR it is the least expensive of these three listings, but that is a price fact—not proof that it offers the best value per frame or per task.
Choose the i5-14400F shortlist when…
You want the highest documented core/thread count in this comparison and can confirm motherboard firmware, cooling and power behavior for the exact build. The current listing is 90 SAR above the i5-12400F. Only equivalent testing can determine whether that gap is justified for your applications.
Choose the Ryzen 5 7600 shortlist when…
You are intentionally building around AM5 and DDR5, or basic integrated display output and the official boxed cooler specification reduce other build requirements. Its current CPU listing is the most expensive here. Do not treat the socket choice as a promise of a particular future upgrade; verify currently supported processors and the exact board’s firmware policy.
